Tony and Laura Lewry met in Scotland on a missionary training course in 2002. They married two years later and lived “normal” lives! Tony was the church youth pastor and then moved into construction. In 2014 Teresa Lewry was born, and soon baby number two will be joining the family. Eventually they hope to be a family for children who had been abandoned or unable to be looked after by their own family. God sets the lonely in families- Psalm 68v6
They have worked with YWAM Recife for 4 years from 2011-15 in the area of children at risk and construction. Both started working in the boys’ home there doing shifts but after a while this developed into more specific roles. Tony has worked alongside teens that need extra support entering into adulthood after being on the streets or institutions, through a mentoring program called Project Jose. The project supported and encouraged the boys to go to school to finish their education, gave them a wage for making blocks in a block factory and mentored them in all areas of their lives.
Once Teresa was born Laura stopped the Hope House shifts but helped with administration, and ran the Hope House Sponsorship Program bringing much needed financial support to the house. Making birthday cakes for the boys was also one of her tasks! Laura and Tony were also part of the street team and helped run two Triages facilitating boys to leave the streets.
Both Laura and Tony are very excited to be working alongside the team at With Open Arms as they continue to serve the vulnerable and needy of Recife, Brazil. Until they adopt themselves, they look forward to continuing to be extended family to those God brings into their lives that need extra care.
